Internet Safety and Privacy Issues

With more and more people online, Internet safety and security has become a prominent issue. Here on the next two pages I provide links to some of my old favorites, organizations, authors and software that has stood sentinel on my computers and kept them safe through the years.

Antivirus software is a must if you go online or receive email. Malicious code can be imbedded into webpages that runs in your browser if it does not have the proper security updates. Viruses can arrive as an email attachment or open and run automatically once email is downloaded.

Cyber crimes are on the rise. Make sure you understand identity theft and Cyber stalking. A good place to begin is Cyber Angels.

Windows XP has more security holes than Swiss cheese! Make sure you get your security patches from Windows Updates on a regular basis. Malicious software searches the Internet for un-patched machines to infect!

Another growing problem is unprotected broadband. You MUST use a firewall. Trojan Horses can be installed 100's of unprotected computers. Hey, what better tool to launch a denial-of-service attack? More about that on Steve Gibson's page.

The links I have provided point to some excellent tutorials. There's no way I could write them better, so why try? Instead, I'll give you a brief run-down the information offered on the sites (and remember, this not a complete list of the huge amounts of information available). Then I will list some software solutions you might find helpful. Enjoy. And safe Surfin'!
